Lakin is a small city in the southwest Kansas. The town was founded by A.M. Campbell, who named the town after his wife’s family name in 1873. Lakin is the county seat of Kearny County and has a population of 2,200 people. Lakin is a beautiful town full of historical landmarks. It has multiple parks, including the Lakin City Park, Kearny County State Lake, Ad McVery Park, Osborne Park, and Thornbrough Park. These parks offer residents and visitors a place to play basketball, baseball, skateboard, and enjoy the beautiful scenery with a nice picnic or by exploring the walking paths. Lakin is also rich in history and cultural heritage. It is home to several historical sites and landmarks, such as the Lakin Library and Museum, which offers a glimpse into the town’s past. Lakin hosts several annual events and festivals, including the Run, Fly, Drive event held at the airport, which hosts air and car shows, crafts, games, and many vendors with food. The Kearny County Fair is also a big event for the Lakin community. The fair has all types of 4-H projects, a free BBQ feed, and a livestock sale. Not long after the fair, Lakin also hosts the Kearny County Saddle Club Rodeo.
Lakin is a peaceful town that offers its residents plenty of activities. When there is not an event or festival to attend, the town has a 9-hole golf course that hosts multiple tournaments during the warmer months.
